Wednesday 18 April 2012
St Andrew's Healthcare, Northampton
Young people in the looked after children system have high levels of behavioural, emotional and mental health problems and some present high risk. Many have unmet or even unrecognised needs often falling between service structures and legal frameworks.
This one day event will explore the extent and nature of mental health problems in adolescents who are in care. The day will include presentations on the prevalence and nature of mental health problems in looked after children, the legal frameworks, the challenges of in-reach interventions within secure children’s homes, community out-reach adolescent forensic treatment and the challenges of commissioning services in complex structures and difficult times. These will be followed by group and plenary discussions.
We aim to provide participants with an overview of this complex health service area, to ask questions and to foster dialogue and understanding between different stakeholders. It will include interactive presentations, use of case vignettes and opportunities for professionals to share insights and instances of good practice.
Delegates will come away with:
- An increased understanding of the prevalence and scale of mental health problems
- An appreciation of the diversity of individuals with mental health issues
- An increased understanding of the legislation surrounding looked after children
- An understanding of the differences between community based mental services compared to inpatient services
- An understanding of how these services are commissioned and the challenges that surround these
- An insight into how agencies can develop relationships to work together more effectively to ensure that these children do not fall into the gap.
