Speaking Up is an award winning charity that supports and empowers people with learning difficulties, disabilities and mental health problems, helping them to find a voice and take control of their lives. Its Independent Advocacy Service works closely with St Andrew’s providing free and confidential support to service users at our Northampton, Birmingham, Nottinghamshire  and Essex sites, whether or not they are detained under the Mental Health Act. This support enables individuals to collaborate in the planning and delivery of their care and treatment and the advocacy provides essential feedback to help St Andrew’s drive service development.

Advocacy

Each unit has a monthly advocacy surgery where service users can speak directly to their advocate. This person does not offer advice or personal opinion, they simply aim to empower patients to explore their available options and make an informed decision. Common issues include CPA reviews, tribunals and complaint resolution.

St Andrew’s, Northampton also benefits from Speaking Up’s Non Instructed Advocacy service whereby service users with limited communication and/or impaired capacity are identified and supported on specific issues such as serious medical treatment and placement moves.
