Designed specifically to meet the needs of women with Learning Disability,
St Andrew’s Sitwell unit is celebrating one year since its opening by Christopher Davidge OBE. Accommodating 14 female service users between the ages of 18-70, the medium secure facility provides care for those with dual diagnoses including mental health problems, forensic backgrounds and challenging behaviour, as well as Learning Disability and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Encouraging the development of independent living, service users have supervised access to laundry rooms and kitchens to develop their A.D.L (Activities of Daily Living) skills. They are also supported with a wealth of additional therapies including physio, music and art with a high staff to service user ratio advancing the stabilisation and rehabilitation process.
Other facilities include spacious single rooms with en-suite amenities, a secluded courtyard garden and fully equipped gymnasium – all of which are conducive to positive rehabilitation. There is a communal area with wide screen TV, separate dining room and a further multi purpose area for quiet time and group activities.
With a strong emphasis on providing high quality gender-sensitive services, one of the unit’s key successes has been the provision of a dedicated visiting area.
“It is important to remember that many of our service users have young children“, said Lisa Cairns, Unit Manager. ”For this reason we have created a homely, child-friendly space away from the shared areas and bedrooms. Here children are able to feel comfortable visiting their relatives, protected from any potential disturbance.”

“Our focus is on care and education at all times”, concluded Lisa. “As well as individuals following a care pathway from our Adolescent Service, we also accept external admissions and those with an IQ less than 70. After comprehensive assessment, each service user will follow a bespoke, tailor-made care plan to ensure the continual progress of their independent living skills.”
