Our facility in Essex, located near Basildon, provides regional care for adult men and women aged 18-70 with a variety of mental health and learning disability needs.

We deliver care which is gender-sensitive, holistic and service user-centred. There is a particular emphasis on physical environments, activities and professional services and our care complies with government and professional guidance concerning good practice. We have redeveloped the existing site to include a new, purpose-built facility for women's services. There are 87 beds at St Andrew's Healthcare, Essex which comprise of:
Women's Services
- Enhanced Low Secure (High Dependency) Unit - 13 beds Created to meet a demand for the lack of low secure forensic services. This facility balances the level of physical, procedural and interpersonal security, positioning it between medium and low secure environments. This unit accepts admissions from: Criminal justice set up, Medium secure units, Psychiatric intensive care units, St Andrew's Healthcare medium secure units or other providers.
- Low Secure Rehabilitation Unit - 16 beds
This facility offers care and rehabilitation in a low secure setting. Service users may enter the service at this level, or continue on their care pathway from an existing St Andrew's medium secure unit. The focus of this unit is encouraging independence through management of risk and increasing levels of responsibility. - Intensive Rehabilitation - 6 beds
Enables women to live semi independently and to demonstrate the ability to maintain progress through the care pathway towards non secure living.
Men's Services
- Assessment and Stabilisation for mental disorder - 17 beds
Caters for men with Mental Health problems and personality disorder who require high dependency assessment, care and treatment for challenging behaviour - Personality Disorder Service for Men/ Rehabilitation and Recovery for Mental Illness - 18 beds
A care pathway structured to assess and treat those requiring a DBT framework for rehabilitation and recovery - Rehabilitation and Recovery for Mental Illness/Older Adults and Vulnerable adults - 18 beds
Slow stream rehabilitation and recovery with an additional focus on physical health needs - Step Down Unit - 4 beds
This facility forms the final stage of the care pathway, providing rehabilitation in an open environment. This facility prepares service users for entry back into the community, with the involvement of the local NHS mental health care teams who will provide support beyond discharge.
