18_nov_08_physio_conf_flyer_frontIt is widely accepted that psychiatric patients have significantly poorer physical health than the general population.
There is also increasing evidence that physical activity can enhance psychological well-being in both mentally healthy individuals and psychiatric populations.

This conference is aimed at professionals, working in a variety of mental health settings, who wish to develop their understanding of the benefits that physical activity has upon psychological health.

St Andrew’s Healthcare is delighted to
host this one day conference when eminent speakers from psychology, physiotherapy and psychiatric perspectives will explore the evidence, challenges and successes associated with enhancing psychological well-being through physical activity.

Professor Stuart Biddle, Professor of Exercise and Sport Psychology at Loughborough University, who has published widely on the subject, will provide an overview of the evidence for why physical activity might boost psychological well-being. Dr Irene Cormac, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at Rampton Hospital, will share her extensive knowledge of motivating patients detained in a secure hospital setting to make significant improvements in their health. Mick Skelly, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Mental Health, will explore the unified field theory of well-being whilst
Dr Ayesha Muthu-Veloe, Associate Specialist Psychiatrist at St Andrew’s Healthcare, will talk on the medical risks that have to be considered when introducing physical activity programmes to psychiatric patients.
