 | This national centre for brain injury rehabilitation was established in 1979 and aims to work with adults with acquired brain injury so that their rehabilitation allows them to reach an optimum level of independence and well being.
Kemsley offers services for people between the ages of 18 and 64 with an acquired brain injury. Our primary role is to serve people whose difficult to manage behaviour may deny them access to other rehabilitation services.
Service Description
Pre-admission assessment to ensure that only patients who may benefit are admitted.
A range of purpose built facilities, some locked, allowing patients to be placed with those whose needs are similar.

Appropriately structured and supervised programmes of specialised rehabilitation focusing on the needs of the individual.
Patients with difficult to manage behaviour excluded from other rehabilitation services can frequently be accommodated.

Patient Profile
The Kemsley Service is suitable for:
Adults with acquired brain injury, whose physical, cognitive, emotional and /or behavioural problems require rehabilitation within an in-patient setting.
Patients who retain capacity and are able to consent to in-patient treatment as well as those detained under the Mental Health Act(1983).
Patients who have rehabilitation needs based on brain injury and at any stage after the injury.
Our clients may have physical, communication or swallowing problems requiring specific rehabilitation, medical conditions such as epilepsy or psychiatric conditions (which may require them to be detained under the Mental Health Act)
Facilities
Kemsley comprises five separate ward areas allowing each to incorporate design features appropriate to the needs of the patient group.
Together these units provide a rehabilitation pathway, with accommodation ranging from locked facilities, for safety purposes, to open accommodation with a focus very much on graded return to the community.
Kemsley enjoys a privileged position on the St Andrew’s campus, opposite the cafeteria and health club and overlooking the golf course.
