A Unique Provision Reprovision and expansion of the Lowther Adolescent Service has been carried out at St. Andrew's Healthcare, Northampton, providing new purpose built medium secure accommodation for this established and evolving service. This new building provides 60 places in five sub-units arranged on one self-contained medium secure campus. It has been specially designed to create a safe therapeutic environment that facilitates and extends the treatment of severely ill and disturbed young people. Perimeter and internal security is unobtrusive but highly sophisticated. A central therapy, education and recreation facility includes classrooms, group and individual therapy rooms, a family therapy suite, a training kitchen and an art room. A large ground floor room offers space for social activities, a coffee bar and a refectory for meals. The design ensures access for all young people to safe and supervised outdoor games and relaxation spaces.
Individual Approach Through the provision of specially designed and resourced residential sub-units, appropriate differentiation and separation of young people can take place according to their assessed needs. Each young person has their own room. The experience of separation into small residential groups is complimented by communal facilities, such as the enclosed gardens and central social and education facilities. This high quality physical environment enhances the care and treatment provided by the muli-disciplinary team.
Excellent Resources The varied resources of the main St Andrew's Healthcare campus continue to be available including the Gloucester House sports complex with swimming pool and gymnasium, playing fields and a patient's library. When appropriate, the Workbridge Centre is open to all young people, where training and experience in a work setting is available. The Lowther Building also contains staff offices, meeting rooms, research and library facilities. In addition, there are the established St. Andrew's Healthcare academic resources; Medical Library, Lady Braye Academic Centre, Research Department and conference facilities.
A Commitment to Care This major development enables St Andrew's Healthcare to continue to contribute nationally to the work of understanding and treating those most damaged of our society's children. The Lowther Building provides a purpose built setting for these tasks and for research and staff training. | | | | |
