Monday 23 March 2009
St Andrew's Healthcare, Northampton
The National Brain Injury Centre, based in the Kemsley Unit of St Andrew's Healthcare, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009. As part of a programme of events throughout the year held to mark this occassion a half day conference was held on Monday 23rd March in Northampton. Papers were presented by members of the neuropsychology team that examined the contribution of impairment of self-monitoring skills and challenging behaviour in acquired brain injury. The theoretical, experimental and clinical evidence that implicates a causal relationship between poor self-monitoring and various ABI behaviour disorders was discussed. A number of interventions have been found to be helpful in the management of these disorders using principles drawn from behvaiour therapy and cognitive behvaiour therapy. Successful application of these approaches was illustrated by describing a number of individual case studies. In addition, the relationship between self-monitoring and the management of mood, in both inpatient and outpatient work with individuals wirh ABI was described.
