The future of secure commissioning. A national event hosted by St Andrew’s


Commissioners, clinicians and providers gathered in London from across the country, to listen to the latest ideas from some of the nation's foremost thinkers on the future of secure mental health commissioning.

Opened by Shadow Health Minister, Anne Milton MP who clearly identified the challenges ahead, the day continued with thought provoking presentations from the speakers detailed below. During the afternoon, a series of workshops led by St Andrew's Dr Fiona Mason, Dr Piyal Sen, Dr Graeme Yorston and Operational Director Anita Boothby allowed delegates to contribute their own ideas and thoughts. Feedback from the event was highly positive with many new relationships established.

  • Future development of Forensic Services
    Prof Tom Fahy
    Head of Department, Forensic Mental Health Science
    Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London
    Discussed the evolution of services to meet the growing need for high quality, cost effective facilities as the population requiring specialist care increases and challenges become more complex. The challenges facing the future of these services was discussed using case studies to illustrate.

    Integrating rights, risks, rehabilitation and recovery into healthcare governance to effectively monitor outcomes and provide useful reporting information. HoNOS-secure, an outcome measure specially adapted for secure environments was covered.

  • Market Drivers in Independent Mental Health Care

    Highlighted the factors that drive the independent mental health care sector including a comparison of bed capacity and detained patients against the NHS since 1993 and factors such as funding which may provide further opportunities for the independent sector.
