Women and Brain Injury

Monday 14 September 2009
St Andrew's Healthcare, Northampton

Although statistics for the occurence of acquired brain injury are weighted heavily towards the vulnerability of young men, it is also the case that brain injury has a very significant impact upon women. This is two-fold in that women both sustain brain injuries, and in addition although uninjured themselves can frequently be in the position of providing care or support for a brain injured relative such as their partner or child.

This one day national conference provided a unique opportunity to hear about the impact of brain injury upon women and engage in discussion with colleagues in the field.

Organised by the National Brain Injury Centre at St Andrew's Healthcare as part of its 30th Anniversary programme, this event brought together professionals to share their perspective on women and brain injury. Alongside this, women with a variety of experiences spoke on how brain injury has impacted on them, addressing key issues such as relationships and childcare.

The day also provided opportunities to network with colleagues and discuss major themes, including how to provide appropriate support and intervention for brain injured women and addressing matters of childcare.
