Treatment Philosophy for Learning Disability

The fundamental ethos of our services is based on a concept of rehabilitation.

Our patient centred treatment pathways encourage service users to embrace increased levels of responsibility, replace maladaptive behaviours with pro-social ones, building skills and reducing risk. Through this, service users move towards less restriction and access community services.

Our programmes are based on cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic and creative therapy principles, tailored to the individual's intellect level and include:

  • Self esteem building
  • Assertion
  • Anger Management
  • Relaxation
  • Addressing substance abuse
  • Developing social skills

Every unit is supported by an extensive multi-disciplinary team, who undertake and extensive assessment and regular reviews of both residents and care pathways.

We actively support our residents throughout the discharge process - this may include preparatory visits to future placement and liaison between staff from both units. A final meeting is organised to complete the following:

  •   St Andrew's Healthcare Discharge Plan including CPA and Care Management assessment
  •   Risk assessments
  •   Funding agreements
  •   Formalisation of statutory responsibilities
  •   Nominated RMO and CPA Keyworker
  •   Agree transition plans

We ensure that appropriate follow-up arrangements are agreed, with our standard being a visit by Social Worker and Keyworker after six weeks.]
