Useful Terms Glossary

For our service users we have listed below some of the terms commonly used at St Andrew's.

SERVICE USER
– person receiving care and taking part in treatment

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM
– the team of doctors, nurses, therapists, support workers and others who are involved in service user care

PRIMARY HEALTHCARE – first healthcare, such as the dentist or GP service

RMO – Registered Medical Officer – a Doctor or Psychiatrist

CPA – Care Programme Approach, a pathway of individual care and services, undertaken from admission to discharge

CPA CO-ORDINATOR
– the person allocated to work with service users to ensure that their needs are identified and met

TALKING THERAPIES – therapies that involve talking, one to one or in groups

OT – Occupational Therapy, helping with everyday living

AFTERCARE – care that service users will receive after they have left St Andrew’s

DISCHARGE – the day residents leave St Andrew’s

WARD ROUND – a meeting to discuss service user progress care and treatment

MEDICATION – tablets, liquid and or injection prescribed to treat illness

PHARMACY – the place where medication is stored

SELF MEDICATION – when a service user takes their own medicine as the doctor has prescribed

GP – General Practitioner or Doctor

FIRE DRILL – practising what to do in the event of a fire

DATE PROTECTION ACT – rules regarding the protection of a service user's personal details

SPIRITUAL SUPPORT – religion and spiritual support, whatever faith

HEALTH RECORDS – records relating to a service users health

FREE TIME – time when there is no planned activity

EN SUITE – where a bathroom is located within/next to a bedroom

ILLICIT SUBSTANCES – things that are illegal to take either by eating, inhaling or injecting

LEAVE
– time away from St Andrew’s

TRANSLATOR AND INTERPRETER SERVICES – people who able to translate language and tell staff what is being said using the English Language

ZERO TOLERANCE – not at all allowed or acceptable

DIVERSITY – a variety of people

EQUALITY – to treat people fairly. All people are equal, deserving the same rights as each other

LAWYER – a professional person that can assist and give advice about the law

DETAINED – to have to stay somewhere under the law

CONSENT – to agree

RECREATION CLUB – the place where social events and activities take place

TUITION – teaching session

INDUSTRIAL THERAPY – work activity
