New, state of the art men’s facility opening in Birmingham
March ’09 sees the opening of St Andrew’s Healthcare, Birmingham. Drawing on our success & expertise, this latest facility will allow service users in the West Midlands and neighbouring areas to receive care as close as possible to their communities and families.
Developed to meet the needs of NHS partners and the Criminal Justice System, St Andrew’s, Birmingham will provide a unique combination of services including comprehensive care pathways for 128 adult male service users affected by Mental Health problems as well as Learning Disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Range of security levels
With four levels of security, Medium, Enhanced Low (aimed at meeting the need for low secure forensic provision) and Low, as well as a Step-Down, Pre-Discharge unit, Birmingham will follow our tradition of providing public healthcare in the finest environment with the appropriate security setting.
Nick Ruffley, Director of Men’s Services said, “Being able to provide an Enhanced Low security level allows us to treat men who have typically remained in medium secure facilities for longer than necessary because of their challenging behaviours.”

Specialist ASD service to meet growing demand
Birmingham will also benefit from the expertise already in place at Northampton and Essex with provision for 16 service users in its state of the art ASD unit.
“We are known for the quality and diversity of our specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services. This low secure Learning Disability facility will go a long way to extend care pathways for many of our service users”, continued Nick.
This development forms part of the charity’s national expansion and regionalisation plans and a number of Open Days are scheduled in the near future.
