Summary
This study aims to identify factors specific to schizophrenia that increase the risk of violent behaviour. We hope that this research will advance our understanding of violent behaviour in schizophrenia and so might lead to better prevention and management of violence, improving patients’ and carers’ quality of life. We will interview volunteers using a number of standardized clinical and neuropsychological assessments. Volunteers will also be asked to provide a cheek swab sample in order to study the role that genetics may play in determining violent behaviour in schizophrenia. Some participants will also be invited to attend for an MRI brain scan. The research team will also ask permission to get further information by speaking to family members and obtaining medical and criminal records.
