Services for adolescents : Brain Injury for Adolescent's

A new adolescent service will be available from November 2010 in Northampton in response to the growing number of young people treated within the charity for acquired brain injury. The service will offer low secure residential rehabilitation and care for 13 to 21 year olds who have some of the most challenging behaviour or developmental problems as a result of brain injury.

A collaboration between the National Brain Injury Centre at St Andrew’s Healthcare’s Kemsley unit and our existing adolescent services will provide a structured and supportive environment, run by some of the best clinicians in the country.

Our primary aim is to care and rehabilitate young people by improving their quality of life and allowing them to progress through the care pathway. The facility will also care for any co-morbid mental health issues such as ADHD, depression and symptoms relating to the experience of severe stress, as well as physical disabilities such as epilepsy, hemiplegia and incontinence.

Our philosophy is to provide a specialist service that can intervene as early as possible following injury, to maximise the positive impact on an individual’s recovery trajectory. Ward-based multi-disciplinary teams plus 24-hour nursing and medical cover work together with teachers from our on site special needs educational facility, in the formulation of individual tailored treatment pathways, which are often in response to complex behavioural needs, sometimes forensic.
