The Role

Associate Hospital Managers undertake hearings as a panel of three, and are specifically appointed to consider evidence given by the patient’s Responsible Clinician, Social Worker and Nurse, following the patient’s renewal of section, Appeal against detention, or Nearest Relative’s request for discharge. You will be expected to consider verbal information from the patient’s, legal representative, Advocate, and family views in determining the criteria for detention and make sure that the patient’s rights are upheld.

This is an important legal role required by the Mental Health Act 1983.

About you

To apply for this role, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Good knowledge or experience of Mental Health.
  • Previous experience of working with vulnerable people.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • As part of a panel of three, be able to make decisions based on a fair and lawful basis.
  • Following induction and having sat on a minimum of 3 panel hearings, you are required to chair hearings on a rotating basis.
  • As chairperson of hearings, you will be required to write up and submit online, the panel’s Decision (the outcome), to St Andrews Healthcare.
  • Recognise and respect confidentiality of our service users (patients).
  • Proficient in IT Skills and online video meetings (including Microsoft Teams, Word and Excel)
  • Be able to attend no less than 2 hearings per month in either an AM or PM slot.
  • Be available to attend quarterly daytime Training Sessions.

Since the Covid 19 Pandemic it has been necessary to hold these hearings via video conference on Microsoft Teams, however, the ability to drive to the Northampton, Birmingham and Essex site, whichever is the closest to you, will be required, once it is safe to undertake face to face hearings.  You may be asked to attend hearings at another site but compensation for your travel will be provided in this case.

This role does not attract a salary, but an attendance fee, mileage from home to the St Andrew’s site and printing fees are reimbursed on a monthly basis.
