A bit about the role

We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated individual to complete our team of instructors.  The role of a Vocational Skills Instructor – Catering Skills Trainer/Chef (VSI) is to support service users in undertaking all aspects of catering work in our service user canteen, whilst ensuring service users achieve their individual goals and gain transferable skills in a real life work environment.

The VSI supports the achievement of service user goals through positive role modelling and working alongside service users, whilst focusing on the needs of the department at all times.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting service users to achieve their goals through the delivery of meaningful activity, graded to the ability of the service user, and that also meets the needs of the canteen and its customers.
  • Training service users of varying ability levels to participate as fully as they can in the preparation, serving and clean-up of refreshments and meals in our canteen, as well as the production of items for sale in our coffee shop.
  • Contributing to the achievement of set income targets by:
    • Participating in the planning and delivery of menus that are nutritious and appeal to our service users
    • Effective stock management, including the achievement of waste targets
    • Involvement in the ordering of both produce and sundry items for the kitchen
    • Serving customers on the canteen till
  • Contributing to the ongoing assessment of service user progress by liaising with colleagues, referrers and care teams and through the daily writing of notes and regular formal reviews.
  • Promoting independence, self-esteem, trust and teamwork for our service users through positive role modelling and encouragement.
  • Ensuring that cleanliness and record keeping within the department meet, as a minimum, the food hygiene standards as assessed by the Environmental Health Department.

We would like to hear from people with excellent communication and organisation skills, who have a minimum of 2 years’ kitchen experience.  We are looking for someone who is keen to share their passion for catering and has a desire to support the development and progress of others.  The role requires strong food preparation and cooking skills with experience of creating new, healthy menus. Competent use of a computer is essential. The ability to work autonomously or as part of a team is vital, as is the ability to empathise and build a rapport with our service users.  Strong baking skills would be an advantage, as would an existing food hygiene certification, though training will be provided to the right candidate.

For an informal chat about the role, please phone Chloe While, Service Manager, on 01604 872779.

Closing Date – Sunday 11th August
