The role

This role will have overall responsibility for enhancing our reputation as a charity that transforms the lives of people who are experiencing a mental illness or disorder and as a first class centre of education and innovation.   

As Senior External Communications Manager you will report to the Director of Communications and take overall responsibility for developing and implementing a comprehensive external communication strategy and plan, ensuring alignment with St Andrew’s strategic goals and the overall communication strategy.

Working closely with the External Communications Manager, you will maximise the use of internal research and thought leadership to offer compelling insights, enabling the charity to leverage this with external stakeholders.

You will also use multiple channels, including social media, to enhance St Andrew’s reputation, integrating this with internal communication activities.

Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key journalists in appropriate media will be key. You will act as a spokesperson for the charity where necessary as well as supporting, developing and guiding the external communication media skills of the Executive team and other senior internal stakeholders.

About you

We’re looking for a communications expert with significant experience of leading and producing proactive and reactive external communications. You will need strong experience in managing communications across all media channels and a proven track record of establishing working relationships with key media editors and journalists at both a national and local level.

You will have a strong track record of influencing and building collaborative partnerships with senior internal stakeholders.  You will need to demonstrate an ability to measure success in the service you provide. This is a challenging and highly visible role that will require high levels of resilience, flexibility and drive for results.
