Salary Range: £20,950 - £22,660

(37.5 hours) Monday - Friday

The Charity

St Andrew’s Healthcare is a charity providing specialist mental healthcare services. We work in partnership with a number of NHS, voluntary, educational and research organisations to deliver a range of specialist inpatient and community mental healthcare services, education and research that helps to improve the lives of people with complex mental health needs.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and reliable person to work within our Occupational Therapy team, to help provide a pathway of assessment and treatment to our Deaf patients.  We provide secure inpatient services, with the objective of enabling deaf people to live well and to their full potential in the least restrictive environment possible.

As a Technical Instructor you will have the opportunity to work within our growing team both in a medium secure care and further along the recovery pathway to the community setting. You will be part of a highly motivated team and will expected to provide a wide range of support under the instruction of the Registered Occupational Therapists

Your role with us

Your duties will include supporting the current therapy programme which includes, horticulture, individual and group work, sport, arts and crafts, vocational, life skills, functional skills, sensory etc.  You will be encouraged to contributing new creative ideas for both individual and group activities to support patient recovery and wellbeing.  As a creative and flexible person, you will show that you have excellent communication skills and can respond to the needs of a wide range of patients. 

If you are successful, you will be expected to have specific skills to work in the team, supporting within the areas of personal management, leisure and other activities.

Your supervision and mentorship is led by a senior occupational therapist who will provide an extensive induction into both the clinical area and the role of a technical instructor.  There will also be opportunities for continued development through local training.

Your profile

The use of British Sign Language (BSL) skills will be required for this role.  If you have not had BSL training, we will be able to support your training and development in this area. Also, an understanding of Deaf Culture is needed to support the patients’ recovery, we have a large experienced team to help support your development in these areas.

It will be useful if you have knowledge of Mental and Physical health issues or show that you are keen to learn, this will help to have a positive working relationship with the patients.


You will need to be able to work in a fast paced environment while still building and maintaining rapport with the patients.  You will also have the confidence to provide planned activities and the possibility to work outside working hours, when the need arises e.g. an evening party or sports event.

St Andrews is now offering opportunities to join the apprenticeship programme for occupational therapists, pending an additional recruitment process.
