Birmingham staff walking group take on the Long Mynd

Last month a small, but determined group, from St Andrew’s headed out to Long Mynd, a valley located within the heart of the Shropshire Hills.

Together, they decided a day of mindful hiking, fresh air and great company would be good for them, while also an important way to bond as a team.

The eight walkers tackled the climb, despite temperatures soaring well above 30°C, managing to complete 5.5 miles of mixed inclines and walking nearly 12,000 steps.

Teacher Andrew Kane, who led the determined group, said: “While the heat certainly made the day more challenging, we were rewarded with a refreshing breeze across the summit and spectacular views stretching across the Shropshire countryside.

“Thankfully, everyone came prepared with suitable walking gear, plenty of water, snacks and an essential supply of sun cream. The effort of the climb was more than matched by the sense of achievement and enjoyment we shared throughout the day.”

James Jones, another member of the team, added: “One of the most rewarding aspects of the hike was the camaraderie that developed within the group. As we made our way across the hills, we spent hours walking, talking and sharing more than a few proper belly laughs.

“Surrounded by some of the finest scenery the Shropshire Hills have to offer, it was a wonderful opportunity to switch off, connect with colleagues and enjoy the many benefits that walking can bring.”

Andrew decided to plan the day as he has previously written Birmingham’s Patient Express Newsletter how beneficial hiking and walking can have as a meaningful activity.

He said: “This experience was a perfect reminder that those benefits apply just as much to us as staff, than to patients. Spending time outdoors, being active and sharing experiences with colleagues can do wonders for our wellbeing.”

Those who joined Andrew were Krysztof (Edgbaston), Aniq (Lifford), James Jones (Northfield), Adrian (Northfield), alongside several familiar faces from St Andrew’s years gone by.

After completing the hike, they all headed into Church Stretton for some well-earned food and refreshments, rounding off the day in one of the town’s charming country taverns.

Andrew added: “Following the success of this trip, we will definitely be organising future walking and hiking events. If you would be interested in joining us, please contact either Andrew or James Jones and we will add you to the email distribution list. Walkers of all abilities are welcome, and we are always happy to hear suggestions for future destinations.

“It really was a fantastic day, great company and a reminder of just how much a simple walk can do for our wellbeing. We look forward to seeing even more people join us next time.”
