Essex Healthcare Assistant honoured with Cavell Star Award

A Healthcare Assistant whose “compassion, professionalism and unwavering commitment” to his work have made a lasting impact on both patients and colleagues has won a Cavell Star Award.

Caleb Collins, who works on Danbury Ward within the complex mental health charity St Andrew’s Healthcare, was nominated by Occupational Therapy Assistant Laurajaye Grindy in recognition of his outstanding contribution to patient care and team support.

The Cavell Star Award programme recognises healthcare professionals who embody the values of compassion, dedication and excellence every day.

Through his exceptional patient care, support for colleagues and commitment to always doing the right thing, Caleb has made a significant difference to the lives of those around him and has been named a Cavell Star Award winner.

Caleb joined St Andrew’s Healthcare two years ago after deciding to move into healthcare from a career in finance.

Laurajaye said: “Caleb very quickly established himself as one of the ward's most trusted and respected team members. He’s known for his calm nature, positive attitude and dedication to those in his care. Colleagues say his presence is felt whenever he is on shift.

“When he's working, you know it because he's always visible, always engaged and always supporting patients.”

Whether supporting patients on the ward, facilitating activities in the courtyard or accompanying patients on additional leave, Caleb consistently goes above and beyond to meet the needs of those around him.

He regularly stays beyond his scheduled hours when required and willingly adapts his own break times or starts work early to ensure patients receive the support they need.

Tony Miller, Service Director for Essex, said: “Caleb’s ability to build meaningful therapeutic relationships with patients has become one of his defining strengths. He has a natural talent for engaging individuals who may be withdrawn or reluctant to participate, encouraging them to join activities that support their wellbeing and recovery.

“We’re so proud of him and I couldn’t think of a more deserving Cavell Star Award winner.”

From day-to-day interactions to organised events such as Fun Fridays, where he actively participates in football, badminton and other activities alongside patients, Caleb helps create a positive, inclusive and therapeutic ward environment.

Working on one of the most challenging wards on site, Caleb has earned praise for his exceptional attention to detail, comprehensive handovers and deep understanding of patient needs. Despite being relatively early in his healthcare career, colleagues recognised from the outset that his insight, awareness and judgement were of an exceptionally high standard.

Laurajaye added: “Nothing is ever too much trouble for Caleb. He is known for supporting colleagues across teams, helping other departments when needed and taking on tasks with professionalism and enthusiasm. His dedication to delivering high-quality care is matched by a genuine desire to help others.”

Tony added: “Caleb brings a quiet wisdom and professionalism to everything he does. He is someone colleagues trust implicitly, both to provide excellent care and to represent the service with professionalism.”

Caleb, who received his prize at the recent summer party in Essex, said: “I was truly honoured and very humbled to be given this award, but for me, I am just doing my job. A job I enjoy as I feel I am really making a difference.”
