A Senior Healthcare Assistant at St Andrew’s Healthcare has won an award after a heartfelt patient tribute highlighted his compassion, dedication and leadership on the ward.
Peter Holman, who works on Berry ward, has been recognised for consistently going above and beyond in his role, with colleagues and patients alike describing him as a “steady and reassuring presence”.
He has been presented with a Cavell Star award. Run by the Cavell charity, it recognises nurses, midwives, nursing associates and HCAs who go above and beyond in their roles.
The nomination was sparked by a patient, who has spent 30 years in inpatient services, including the last six years at St Andrew’s Healthcare.
Tom* described the organisation as “the best place I have ever been,” crediting staff like Peter for making that difference.
He said: “Peter consistently goes above and beyond. He goes out of his way to help me and listen to me when I’m not feeling so great.”
Colleagues echoed these sentiments, highlighting Peter’s compassion in both small gestures and meaningful actions. Fellow HCA Judian Hypolite said his approach to care sets him apart.
She said: “Peter is constantly demonstrating compassion through both small gestures and meaningful actions.”
According to patients and staff, what stands out most is Peter’s dedication to truly listening and responding with empathy, particularly during difficult moments. His ability to create a sense of safety and trust has made him a valued figure on the ward.
Team members describe him as “a steady, reassuring presence - the kind of person you want nearby on a difficult day.”
Peter’s commitment extends beyond his day-to-day responsibilities. He organised a ward party to mark Tom’s 55th birthday, a gesture that reflects his focus on creating moments of joy and normality for those in his care.
In addition to his compassionate approach, Peter is recognised as a strong and dependable leader.
Ward Manager Jackson Mazivia said: “He is a strong team leader who remains calm and in control in all situations. He plays a key role in maintaining high standards on the ward, including leading IPC audits, and is someone who inspires those around him.”
Judian added: “He inspires me and you feel safe when Peter is around.”
Gary Stobbs, Managing Director of the Northampton hospital, said: “Peter’s colleagues say his influence goes far beyond his clinical duties - helping to foster a culture of care, professionalism and kindness among the wider team.
“With his dedication, resilience and genuine compassion, Peter Holman exemplifies what outstanding care looks like, combining clinical excellence with humanity and reliability.”
