Ward Manager wins prestigious Cavell Star award

Ward Manager Jackson Maziva has been awarded a prestigious Cavell Star in recognition of his outstanding leadership, commitment to patient-centred care and dedication to supporting both patients and colleagues.

The nomination was submitted by Senior Healthcare Assistant Judian Hypolite, who was herself recently recognised with a Cavell Star.

Judian said: "Jackson has created a culture where staff feel empowered to develop new ideas and work in partnership with patients to improve care. Many successful initiatives on the ward have been possible because of his encouragement and support. He leads with compassion, curiosity and trust."

One of the initiatives Jackson has championed is Moments That Matter, which gives patients a stronger voice by encouraging meaningful interactions to be shared with the multidisciplinary team. The project has strengthened relationships between patients and staff, built trust and helped create a more positive ward environment.

Jackson also supported improvements to the ward's approach to Section 17 leave after listening to patient feedback. Staff and patients worked together to redesign the daily planning process, introducing greater transparency, more patient-led requests and feedback, better alignment of staff breaks with patient needs and, ultimately, zero incidents relating to Section 17 leave.

Judian also highlighted the impact Jackson has had on her own professional development.

She said: "He has been instrumental in my development as a project champion, encouraging me to present at divisional level, to the Executive team, to NHS England and at the Culture of Care Conference. I never thought I would be able to do that, but he gave me the confidence. He doesn't take credit for other people's success, he helps them achieve it."

Colleagues from across Berry ward and the wider multidisciplinary team were equally keen to recognise Jackson's leadership.

Deputy Ward Manager Oluwabusola Ogundepo said: "Jackson consistently places both patients and colleagues at the centre of his work. He provides essential support to staff, ensures training remains up to date and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to patient care."

Senior Social Worker Selina Owusu-Sekyere said: "Jackson encourages me to advocate for patients and their carers. He is passionate about creating positive experiences for both patients and staff and has taken the time to guide and teach me, helping me build the confidence to carry out my role effectively."

Reflecting on the award, Jackson said: "I am very humbled and honoured to have been given this award, but I am only doing my job. It's the team who really deserve the recognition because everyone works so well together."

The Cavell Star recognises nurses who make an exceptional difference to patients, colleagues and the organisations they serve, celebrating those who go above and beyond to deliver outstanding care.
