Meet Amy Mace, one of our Occupational Therapy Technical Instructors.
Amy is one of the stars of a new documentary filmed by Sky News, which aims to help raise awareness about Deaf people. One in five people in the UK are Deaf or have hearing loss (source: RNID), and this powerful short film explores what it is really like to be Deaf and living in the UK today.
Amy is Deaf and has been supporting patients in our Deaf service, on Fairbairn ward, for over two years. She said:
"It was an honour to be part of a documentary to raise awareness about Deaf people. It means the world to me to be a part of this documentary because I am Deaf myself and continue to fight for our Deaf community. I want to show that Deaf people are able to do anything just like hearing people; to show that we don't let our Deafness stop us.
"I've worked for the Deaf service at St Andrew's for over two years. I've been working with Deaf patients, showing them that they can achieve their goals while they are staying here at St Andrew's. I am deeply passionate for this service and willing to continue to support our Deaf patients. Not only that, I also am passionate to support hearing people who work here, to encourage them to learn sign language; to build their confidence communicating with Deaf people around St Andrew's hospital.
Well done, Amy, for shining a light on such an important topic.
